Description

The history of Mayfield dates back to 1815 when explorer William Charles Wentworth was granted a Mayfield Crown Grant from the governor of NSW. Today the Settlers Cottage is a heritage-listed homestead and popular accommodation. Vines were first planted in ’99 and Mayfield vineyard was born. Since ownership changed hands in ’21, Mayfield has been given a breath of cool, crisp Orange air from root to bottle under the guidance of the Eastham family. Single-vineyard wines, minimal intervention and a focus on elegance, refinement and vivacity are at its core.

Cool climate range includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Rosé, Sparkling and Cabernet. Planted in 1998, Mayfield Vineyard’s natural features include an elevation of 950m with more than 900mm per annum rainfall. The cool climate compliments the rich loam and basalt soils to produce one of the top wine regions in Australia.

The grapes were fermented in open top tanks (30 percent whole bunch) prior to being transfer for maturation in Tronçais French oak puncheons (20 percent new) for nine months.

THE Wine Companion

Mayfield Vineyard Mrs Crawford Pinot Noir 2023 – 93 / 100 Points

The inaugural release of this wine pays homage to the family that developed the Mayfield property. Made with 39% whole bunch and matured in French oak puncheons, of which 20% was new for nine months. Raspberry leaf, two-tone strawberries and redcurrants. Dried cranberry and autumn leaf litter. Sage leaf, bottlebrush and stinging nettle. The wine is well worked, with the whole bunch adding density. Tannins are chewy, and acidity ebbs and flows but keeps everything humming along. Allspice, salted licorice and cassia bark on the finish. It sits in a good place in the portfolio, with value for dollar a recurring feature from Mayfield..
