Description

Grace Winery (Chuo Budoshu) was founded in 1923 by Chotaro Misawa in Katsunuma, Yamanashi Prefecture, the birthplace of Japan’s wine industry. The winery has a history of innovation, being one of the first to introduce modern techniques like Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP) in 1990 to enhance grape quality. Today, the winery is run by the Misawa family, with the current winemaker being Chotaro’s great-great-granddaughter, Ayana Misawa. The winery is committed to the philosophy that great wine comes from high-quality grapes grown in exceptional vineyards. They focus on traditional Japanese craftsmanship while also implementing progressive, modern techniques to enhance quality and reflect the unique terroir of the Katsunuma region. Grace Winery is considered a benchmark for quality in the Japanese winemaking community.

The Toriibira district is greatly treasured by our fourth generation owner, Shigekazu Misawa. It has a long history, is located at an altitude of 450m, and is revered by local people due to its well-drained gravelly soil, resulting in high quality grapes. The harvested grapes went through further selection and the best lots were fermented in old French oak barrels and further matured in stainless steel tanks. The wine possesses both elegant acidity and complexity with a long finish.

THE WINEFRONT

Grace Koshu Toriibira Vineyard Private Reserve 2022 – 94 / 100 Points

Grown at 450m ASL. This wine is fermented in old French oak, then then matured in stainless steel. This reserve may be a ‘better’ wine than the 2022 Hishiyama Vineyard tasted the other day, though I prefer drinking the no oak number.

A richer, more glossy expression of Koshu, but also has a distinct stony character running through it. Apple, pear, a little spice, some lemon rind and a smattering of something slightly green, like herbs or fern. The finish has plenty grip and freshness with a subtle lemon/quinine bitterness. Complex. And I reckon it will age quite nicely too.
