Description

Carlos Raposo, has now returned to his home region of Dao to craft his own, very special wines. Taking everything he has learnt from the top producers he has worked with in Bordeaux, Burgundy, Napa, Heathcote, Ribera Del Duero, and of course the Douro, he is now applying everything to the old-vine treasures he has returned to.

The grapes selected for this wine are from the Senhorim sub-region, where the age of the vines ranges between 30 and 60 years and are from mostly monovarietal vineyards.  Organic & Biodynamic; After a careful selection in the vineyard, these grapes were transported to the winery using 15kg boxes in order to respect and preserve the integrity of the grapes. The alcoholic fermentation took place in thermoregulated stainless steel vats and lasted 6 weeks.  The malolactic fermentation followed and took place in French oak barrels.  The wine remained there for 18 months.

Carlos Raposo Ideal Tinto DOC DÃO 2019 – 17.50 / 20 Points

Vines aged 50–60 years planted on granite soils, field blends including Jaen, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional. Quite a lot of whole bunch. Fermentation and malolactic in tank and aged in older oak for 22 months – barrels that he gets from a friend in Puligny-Montrachet that have been used only for white wine (to reduce any risk of brett contamination). Raposo just leaves it alone: no racking, just topped up.
Carlos Raposo tells me he’s shy and likes to make ‘shy wines’ but this red is definitely not as shy as the whites. Little bit of green pepper mixed in with the dark-red fruits. There is only one word for this wine: delicious. Intense and concentrated but so light on its feet. The tannins are definite, dry, super-fine. Fragrant, ethereal, dry and sweet at the same time. So subtle. I think this will still taste fresh as a daisy in 10 years’ time. There is great definition thanks to the tannins. Long, almost chalky on the finish.
