Description

António Madeira, who is French of Portuguese descent, has his roots in the foothills of Serra da Estrela. Since 2010, António Madeira has been researching, the places in this sub-region, that our ancestors elected as the best for vine, those that we might call the «Grands Crus of the Dão highlands» and found a series of old vines that are distinctive because of the authenticity of their grape varieties, the characteristics and nuances of their granite soils and sun exposures.

2017 was a very dry and early year, harvest started on August 23rd, one month before usual. Excellent year thanks to exceptional weather conditions that allowed harvesting healthy and ripe grapes. This red Vinhas Velhas 2017 comes from the blend of several small old vineyards cultivated by Antonio with dedication. It illustrates very well the philosophy of the domain.

A Palheira 2017 is a blend of 2 of the best old vineyards cultivated by Antonio, one 60 years old vine where the Baga dominates, and a 100 years old vine where pink granit gives a special character to the wine. The wines of these 2 vines where so good in 2017 that we decided to bottle it separately from the others old vineyards that usually goes to the blend of « Vinhas Velhas » red wine. So A Palheira 2017 shows the best results that we achieve in 2017 reds.

Antonio Madeira Dão Vinhas Velhas Tinto 2017 – 94 / 100 Points

From Dão – Serra da Estrela – from vineyards 50 to 100 years old. Made from a field blend of Jaen, Baga, Tinta Amarela and 20 other native grape varieties. Dates, spice, violet, black fruit – a bit like a spicy fruit roll. Medium-bodied, chalky feel to the tannin, open-knit and pleasantly chompy, fresh and lively, despite the darker flavours, raspberry and spiced blood plum bob up on a long bright finish. A delightful and different red. Recommended.

Antonio Madeira Dão Vinhas Velhas Tinto 2017 – 93 / 100 Points

This field blend made with Jaen, Baga, Tinta Amarela and others showcases aromas of wild dark red berries, sweet fresh meats, forest floor and a core of minerality. Captivating and enticing bouquet. Powerful on the palate with a core of fruit and mineral, warming alcohol, moderate acidity and a firm vibrant tannins. Fruit flavours mirror the bouquet while the earth flavours suggest clay and chalk. Tannins have power and are omnipresent. Best drinking from 2023 through 2033+ with food, decant for service.
