Description

António Madeira, who is French of Portuguese descent, has his roots in the foothills of Serra da Estrela. Since 2010, António Madeira has been researching, the places in this sub-region, that our ancestors elected as the best for vine, those that we might call the «Grands Crus of the Dão highlands» and found a series of old vines that are distinctive because of the authenticity of their grape varieties, the characteristics and nuances of their granite soils and sun exposures.
Beautiful aromatics already with sweet floral cherry and berry fruits. The palate is fresh, supple and fine with lovely acidity and fresh cherry and raspberry fruit. The sweet fruit hides the structure and acidity, which is substantial. Has some grip on the finish. This is focused and linear and quite serious, with nice brightness but also a potential for ageing.

2021 was a year impacted by important rains on the Harvest period (more than 100mm in September). 2021 are ripe and low alcohol wines. A Liberdade 2021 is a white wine that comes from a 30-year-old vineyard that we cultivate in the foothills of Serra da Estrela, composed of 3 autochthonous grape varieties, Encruzado, Cerceal and Bical. This wine was vinified, aged and bottled without the addition of sulphites and without the use of any oenological product.

‘A Liberdade’ is on the right side of natural, meaning a hand-crafted white that’s deep and lively yet crisp and focused. The 2021 vintage is now perfectly ready to drink even if it will continue to age well for several years in the bottle. It’s piercingly pure as well as complex: a little bit smoky, with citrus and green fruits and a hint of cut cedarwood. The acidity is notably fresh and the texture as well as the flavour are deliciously dry, almost chalky, until the very end, when it balances it out with an unexpected creamy impression.

Antonio Madeira Dão A Liberdade Branco 2022 – 17.00 / 20 Points

From the Serra da Estrela subregion. Encruzado, Bical and Cerceal on sandy granite soils. Biodynamic farming. Rented vines in three vineyards, aged 20–30 years. No additions, no added SO2. All his wines are unfiltered. This is unoaked. Notable aroma of herbal citrus and celery seed. Fine stony freshness. A light note of struck-match reduction gives this a very burgundian feel. Extremely fresh and precise. Pure and long. It has the finesse to be compared to white burgundy but it is very much Dão and not an imitation of any other wine. Salty, saliva-provoking finish. Great length. (JH)
