Description

Adega Viúva Gomes Colares was founded in 1808, owned by father and son José and Diogo Baeta. Colares is a demarcated wine region defined in 1908. Viúva Gomes is one of the last remaining classic producers in Colares, Portugal’s most idiosyncratic region. An area of cliffs, bathed on one side by the Atlantic Ocean, with vineyards planted directly on ocean sands, Colares is unique in the world. These are some of the only vines in Europe that escaped the phylloxera epidemic of the 19th century. Colares wines are prized by collectors seeking a vinous window into the true nature of uncorrupted and undiluted old world wines.

Due to its specific terroir, Viúva Gomes wines have a vibrant character. Dominated by sea storms and the southern influence of the Sintra hillside, it is a temperate region, and produces fresh and salty wines, with a lighter structure and high acidity. The Colares region of Portugal is home to unheard of vineyards of ungrafted vines and some of the most unique, compelling, and ageworthy wines. This Malvasia white from Adega Viuva Gomes offers delightful aromas of apple and pear, as well as vanilla and white kitchen spices. It is fresh and mineral, with a dry structure and light acidity. Malvasia de Colares is a unique varietal, native to this region, from ungrafted vines planted in the sandy soils of Colares. It has a mineral character, high acidity, and aromatic notes of the sea and iodine.

Viúva Gomes Malvasia de Colares Colares 2022 – 96 / 100 Points

This has a lovely nose of quince, melon, lemons and flowers. The palate is delicate and nuanced but also precise, focused, really elegant and detailed, with subtle density and good concentration throughout. Such a unique and refined personality. This comes from about 5 lots of ungrafted malvasia vines. Drink or hold..
