Description

Grace Winery (Chuo Budoshu) was founded in 1923 by Chotaro Misawa in Katsunuma, Yamanashi Prefecture, the birthplace of Japan’s wine industry. The winery has a history of innovation, being one of the first to introduce modern techniques like Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP) in 1990 to enhance grape quality. Today, the winery is run by the Misawa family, with the current winemaker being Chotaro’s great-great-granddaughter, Ayana Misawa. The winery is committed to the philosophy that great wine comes from high-quality grapes grown in exceptional vineyards. They focus on traditional Japanese craftsmanship while also implementing progressive, modern techniques to enhance quality and reflect the unique terroir of the Katsunuma region. Grace Winery is considered a benchmark for quality in the Japanese winemaking community.

The Yamanashi de Grace is based on Muscat Bailey A from growers in the Hosaka district, Nirasaki city, at the foot of Mt. Kayagatake in northwestern Yamanashi prefecture, blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from our own Misawa Vineyard. The wine is matured in French oak barrels (for about 8 months), followed by a well-balanced assemblage in a manner so as to maximise the varietal characteristics of the respective varieties. The wine is characterized by varietal purity, and freshness of fruit and soft tannins.

Grace Yamanashi de Grace Rouge 2021 – 90 / 100 Points

“Grace Vineyards likely more famous for their excellent white wines (now all sealed under screwcap, reviews to come), but this red from Yamanashi province is made from Muscat Bailey A, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Muscat Bailey A is a hybrid of Bailey (V. labruscana) and Muscat Hamburg (V. vinifera), developed in Japan.  It’s an unusual wine in some respects. It’s grapey and aromatic, and also a bit funky and not-quite-typical, then there’s redcurrant and strawberry, a little cedar and pencil, and savoury flavours in the mix. It’s only just medium-bodied, the tannin is supple and ripe, some sweet grassy flavour in with red jelly, and a pretty good and long dry finish. It’s kind of like a big rosé in some respects. I find it curiously enjoyable to drink, and kind of hard to score, but I like it”_ Gary Walsh
