Description

The history of Mayfield dates back to 1815 when explorer William Charles Wentworth was granted a Mayfield Crown Grant from the governor of NSW. Today the Settlers Cottage is a heritage-listed homestead and popular accommodation. Vines were first planted in ’99 and Mayfield vineyard was born. Since ownership changed hands in ’21, Mayfield has been given a breath of cool, crisp Orange air from root to bottle under the guidance of the Eastham family. Single-vineyard wines, minimal intervention and a focus on elegance, refinement and vivacity are at its core.

Cool climate range includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Rosé, Sparkling and Cabernet. Planted in 1998, Mayfield Vineyard’s natural features include an elevation of 950m with more than 900mm per annum rainfall. The cool climate compliments the rich loam and basalt soils to produce one of the top wine regions in Australia.

Destemmed and crushed to small open fermenters. The ferment was alternatively hand plunged and pumped-over for gentle extraction of tannins. At the completion of fermentation, the wine was transferred to second fill (45%) and older French oak puncheons (500 litres) and hogsheads (300 litres) including Boutes barrels from Bordeaux for 12 months.

Mayfield Vineyard Cabernet Franc Jonty met Otto 2023 – 93 / 100 Points

Straight Cab Franc is not something we see a lot of in Australia, but done well, and this one certainly is, it can be a delicious drink. From Orange in New South Wales, after fermentation the wine spent a year in a combination of French oak barriques and hogsheads. A crimson/magenta hue, there is a pleasing elegance and sense of refinement with this wine. The nose gives us aromas of florals, black fruits, raspberries and cherries with a flick of smoked meats. The structure is well handled, poised, with a silky texture and fine satiny tannins. There is juicy acidity here, and a lingering finish. A well crafted and most appealing wine, which should drink well over the next four to eight years.
