Freeman Vineyards is a boutique family-owned winery in the Hilltops region of New South Wales, renowned for its Italian-inspired wines and pioneering spirit. Founded in 1999 by Dr. Brian Freeman, a former head of wine science at Charles Sturt University. Freeman transitioned from academia to winemaking, bringing deep viticultural expertise to the Hilltops region. Situated in Prunevale, Hilltops, at 560 metres above sea level, the vineyard benefits from cool nights and sunny days during ripening, deep granite soils mixed with red silt, sand from central Australia and well-drained terrain, ideal for growing high-quality grapes.
Freeman Vineyards is Australia’s only producer of the northern Italian grape varieties Rondinella and Corvina, used in their flagship Secco. Other Italian varietals include Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Aleatico, Prosecco, Fiano, Pinot Grigio, and an obscure varietal for Australia, Furmint. Their priority is well crafted wines with a focus on textural complexity, balance, and food-friendliness.
Crafted from almost 100% single vineyard estate grown Furmint grapes (with a smidge of its typical companion grape Harslevelu), this is the inaugural vintage of Furmint a rare white variety that is said to originate in Hungary and date back to the Middle Ages, a king called Bela and the Tartar invasion of the Tokay region.

Light to mid straw colour with a reserved bouquet of honey, malt and almond. It has the feel of a wine that has seen some time in barrel: not oaky but textural; the bouquet savoury and with more to it than simple primary fruit. Medium weighted, rich and smooth, with lovely balance: a tasty and compelling example of this rare variety

It’s aromatic, buoyant with fruit, beautifully shaped as it passes through the mouth, and well sustained. It has decent texture too, always a bonus with a straight fruit-driven white wine. Nashi pear, citrus, apple and blossomy notes get the job done in attractive style. Nice one. Love the dry, textural, herb-flecked finish. Put Freeman furmint on your dinner menu.
