Grace Winery (Chuo Budoshu) was founded in 1923 by Chotaro Misawa in Katsunuma, Yamanashi Prefecture, the birthplace of Japan’s wine industry. The winery has a history of innovation, being one of the first to introduce modern techniques like Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP) in 1990 to enhance grape quality. Today, the winery is run by the Misawa family, with the current winemaker being Chotaro’s great-great-granddaughter, Ayana Misawa. The winery is committed to the philosophy that great wine comes from high-quality grapes grown in exceptional vineyards. They focus on traditional Japanese craftsmanship while also implementing progressive, modern techniques to enhance quality and reflect the unique terroir of the Katsunuma region. Grace Winery is considered a benchmark for quality in the Japanese winemaking community.
The Toriihira district of Katsunuma town is greatly treasured by our fourth-generation owner, Shigekazu Misawa. This is hilly area with well-drained gravelly soil well-exposed to the sun and has long been revered as a production area producing the most concentrated grapes in Katsunuma. Grapes harvested in the Toriihira district are fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks. The ripe tropical fruit aroma and full-bodied flavour are characteristics of the region.

Grown on a single vineyard, 450m above sea level, with a south-westerly aspect grown in pebble-rich soils with good drainage. Nashi pear, melon rind, slight spice and nutty sake-like character. It’s umami, nutty, but pure and delicate in fruit, a faint herbal seasoning and honeyed flavour and sheen to texture, fine powdery texture, and a long finish, again a hint of bitter rind. Beautiful. Distinctive.
