Description

Carlos Raposo is a Portuguese winemaker and entrepreneur who launched the World Wild Wines project to craft terroir‑driven, imaginative wines from the Dão and other Portuguese regions, aiming to make precise, elegant wines that reflect place and variety. He discovered a connection to nature early, studied viticulture and enology as a teenager in Bairrada, then spent about seven years training and working in Bordeaux and Burgundy before returning to Portugal to build his professional career in winemaking. Raposo worked closely with Dirk Niepoort for many years and became a key figure at Niepoort’s projects, helping shape both Douro and Vinho Verde programs; he left Niepoort around 2018 to pursue his own labels while maintaining collaborative ties on some projects.

The grapes selected for this wine come from different Sub-Regions of Dão. The the age of the vines ranges between 60 and more 100 years. Many of these grapes come from monovarietal vineyards, but also from vineyards with a wide mixture of typical grape varieties from the region such as Encruzado, Malvasia fina, Uva cão, Rabo de ovelha, Branda, Barcelo, Douradinha, among others.

As white grapes are more sensitive to diseases and because most of the aromas and their precursors are contained in the skins, it was extremely important to ensure a perfect selection of the grapes from the vineyard, and thus guaranteeing the final quality of the wine. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were sorted again and sent by gravity to the pneumatic press. The purpose of this process was to gently extract the juice, and to later send it to a thermoregulable vat, allowing the juice temperature to cool down and naturally clarify the must. 48 hours later, the must was ready to ferment in French oak barrels.

Carlos Raposo Wines Dão Definido Branco 2021 – 17.50 / 20 Points

Centenarian vines at 500 m on granite soils. A field blend of Malvasia Fina, Uva Cão, Rabo de Ovelha, Branda, Barcelo, Douradinha, Encruzado, etc. Fermented and aged in small concrete tanks. Definido means ‘definition’. 2,500 bottles produced. Tiny hint of smoky reduction. This is definitely a high-definition wine, as the name suggests. Tightly wound citrus, plus iodine, oysters and crushed stones. That tension opens up in the glass to a gentle peachy note. Precise, even fresher than the Ideal, with the stony/mineral character I associate with vinification in smaller concrete vessels, but I think it is also vineyard-derived. The wine seems to take hold of your mouth but in a more subtle way than the Ideal. Grapefruit purity, seaweed, nutty too. Subtle but complex. A wine to sit with. Drink with seafood, suggests Carlos Raposo.
